Interactive Tour of Ellis Island

As part of an immigration study, Gilmer Intermediate 6th Graders took an interactive tour of Ellis Island provided by Scholastic.  They came to the library and used laptops to tour the stops made by immigrants as they entered the United States many years ago.  They got to hear first hand accounts of immigrants who came to America as children.  Students took notes and asked many questions about the immigration process.

Super exciting things are going on at Gilmer Intermediate!!  Students in Mrs. Jones homeroom spent several weeks with Mrs. Roz Perry creating birdhouses, yarn art and more!!  A special helper, Mr. Eddie Coleman, came in to help Mrs. Perry with with the bird houses.  Students used pre-cut boards to make their very own birdhouses.  Once the building was completed students got to take their birdhouses home.  They  then started yarn art!!  Everyone is having a blast in Mrs. Perry's class!!!

Having Fun with Figurative Language!!

So can you really have fun with similes, metaphors, and onomatopoeia???

Well, Gilmer 6th Graders did!!  Mrs. Laster and Mrs. Fritsche brought their Language Arts classes into the library to get some practice with figurative language...At each station students used iPods to watch a short video about each type of figurative language before they had to write their very own!!  They came up with some really creative similes, hyperboles, metaphors and MORE...  Check it out below!

And here are some examples of what they said...

"The birthday cake was a sweet celebration"~ metaphor

"The lightning was tackling the ground"~ personification

"Crackle, hiss, pop went the campfire"~  onomatopoeia

Gilmer Intermediate has gotten off to a GREAT school year!  So many exciting things are happening here.

GIS 5th Graders participated in a team building activity with their homeroom classes.  They were given a sheet of paper with multiple squares.  There were four strings tied to a marker.  Each string was controlled by a student in the class.  In order to complete the task, students had to make a dot in each square...Pretty TOUGH!!  Find out what the kids learned from the activity...

I spoke to two 5th graders, Mason Hurt and Luke Watson, who told me all about this task...

"We were doing a team-building activity to start the year off."

When I asked them why they were doing this, they told me "we were learning to work together and how to communicate as a class".

The activity really looked like a lot of fun, but I wanted to know what they learned from it.  They replied "We learned how to communicate and work together.  We have to do those things every day in class and even when we play sports".

Guess what their favorite thing is about Gilmer Intermediate... "having more choices"!!!

It is always exciting to have students doing challenging and fun activities at school.  I am sure this is one that they will remember!!

BIG THANKS to Mason and Luke for letting me interview them about their experience!!!

Remembering 9/11

Students at Gilmer Intermediate spent some of their Social Studies time today reflecting on 9/11.  Our country will forever remember this devastating event.

5th Grade Social Studies Class created a special flag to remember 9/11.  They traced their own hands and wrote what freedom means to them.  The entire grade level added their hands to make this AWESOME flag!!

Way to go 5th Graders!!!
